Does advertising your services work?

Does advertising work? Can I get work by simply putting an ad in my local business oriented publication? How much of a response should I expect?

That's a good question. I've heard a variety of stories about advertising. I think it's probably impossible to answer that question simply because its success or failure is so dependent upon the ad itself and in which publication it's placed. I'm hoping that offering a database of professionals in this web site gives us all a better alternative! But if anyone has tips or first-hand stories about advertising, please share it with us!

Advertizing pays, but like anything else it needs to be done right. This means using a professional advertizing consultant. This is a hard message to accept for a programmer because 1) it costs money and 2) we tend to like to do everything ourselves. Still, you are much better off getting the job done right. Hope this helps.

After reading the postings in this thread, I was very surprised at the lack of mention of the topic of web advertising. I don't necessarily mean the banner ads that are becoming commonplace on just about every web page, but rather just putting your web page up and registering it with the well-known search engines. I have received a number of new clients from my web page and apart from the initial design time I had to spend, it's pretty much effortless advertising. Just in case there is any interest, you can find me on the web at http://www.pc-wizard.com

I agree with Frank Hartman, having your own web pages is a definite advantage. (See for yourself at: http://www.cyberseas.com ) The other major factor that keeps me working steadily is having a network of other programmers and consultants that know you do consulting. I specialize in user interface, and it's amazing how many guys working on programs are terrific with the internals, and can't present a friendly, usable GUI. Bottom line: cultivate your contacts.

I find Susan's comment about GUI interesting because I am one of those "internals" guys. I also have a good knack for big picture design. But my UI work stinks. Once I admitted that and began to delegate UI design, I became more valuable, not less. You don't have to know everything, and it is as important to know what you aren't good at as it is to know your strengths (IMO). My lousy web page is at http://www.ciinc.com/andy

I ran an expensive block ad for 4 consecutive weeks in our state's leading business paper (not the mainstream press) and did not get a single call. After doing some further research, I've decided that thenext attempt I make will be on radio. IMHO the best place and time would be the most popular breakfast talkback in your area, the one all the 25-50s listen to. I'm hoping it will catch the business owners on the way to work wondering how they're going to fix this ongoing problem they have. With 7 years in sales before I started programming full-time i think I can say with some authority, Word of Mouth, Word of Mouth, Word of Mouth. It's a service sellers version of realtors' "Location Location, Location."

I am currently working as a programmer for a LARGE software company...maybe too large. I am constantly worried that I will get canned because they can replace me with someone who will work for less. I make $30,000/year with no extra pay for overtime. I've been working there for six months and I just graduated college. I'd prefer to work for myself and charge about $65/hour. Any input regarding my situation would be greatly appreciated by email. Thanks.
